DO: Climb the short set of stairs up to the lighthouse, set upon a hill that overlooks Tokyo Bay. While you cannot enter the lighthouse, it’s a great place to sit and watch the sunset. It’s best to go on a clear day, when you might be able to see Izu Oshima island, Miura Peninsula, or even Mt. Fuji! The beach below is popular for camping and fishing, although you’re not allowed to swim because of the rocky shore.
The lighthouse was lit in 1919 and is about 15 meters high. It still supports the safety of large ships that sail through Tokyo Bay, together with Tsurugisaki Lighthouse located on Miura Peninsula on the other side.
FEE: 200 yen to park. There are multiple parking lots along the road to the lighthouse.
WHERE: 1043 Sunosaki, Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture 294-0316
*Look for the blue and white sign 灯台入口 and climb the steps to reach the top.
